Running of all kinds is cross-training for cross country skiing. I have run three half-marathons, the most enjoyable of which was in Duluth, Mn in 2003. I still run the occasional 5-km and 10-km race, but I prefer trails to the road. My 5-km pace is still under 7 minutes per mile, and my half-marathon pace is still under 8 minutes per mile. We have a small running group that goes for long runs on the weekend along the Greenway in Grand Forks.
